Its that time of year again (the beginning) where we come out with our 2020 bold predictions. The year 2019 brought the state of Wisconsin many competitive teams. The Brewers reached the playoffs for the 2nd straight season, the Bucks reached the conference semi-finals and are having a torrid start to the 2019-2020 season, and the Packers just recently clinched the 2 seen in the NFC. In addition, the Badgers football team reached the Rose Bowl and the Marquette Golden Eagles had a good season before being knocked out in the 1st round of the tournament by Ja Morant and Murray St. With all of that, how will 2020 be better?? Here are our bold predictions:
The Brewers will have an opening series sweep of the Cubs but fall short on the season. Is this not the same feeling coming into last season?? A group of mostly un-proven starting pitchers accompanied by some star power in the field? While the acquisition of Lauer, Brett Anderson, and Josh Lindblom offer some durability and upside, are those three really the group you want to hinge post-season hopes to. Yelich is a stud and will put up stud-like numbers once again as his 2019 proved that the 2018 MVP season was no fluke. Newly acquired middle infielder Luis Urias will have a breakout season. He will hit .285 with 17 home runs. Overall the Brewers will finish the season 84-78 just missing the playoffs while the Reds become the surprise team to reach the playoffs. The Crew barely made the playoffs last season and now need to do it without Mike Moustakas and Yasmani Grandal, both of which were major contributors.
This is the year they do it. It has to be right? The Bucks will defeat LeBron and the Lakers in 6 games in the 2020 NBA Finals. Yes, Bucks in 6 will finally come true. Giannis will go on to win MVP, and the Bucks will be back on top in the NBA. This may not seem like too bold of a prediction, but this is also me predicting that the NBA is not rigged. The NBA would love nothing more than to see Anthony Davis and Lebron James lift the trophy at the end of the day. With Toronto beating Golden State last year, I have more hope than ever that the Bucks will get er done this year.
Green Bay Packers:
It may not have looked pretty, but the Packers finished as the 2 seed and get the first-round bye. I will be the first to say that I do not think that the Packers are better than the Saints, 49ers, or Seahawks. Heck, I think Vikings might have the better all-around roster, and the Eagles who barely squeaked in the playoffs shredded the Packers in week 4. But, it is the playoffs and once your in, anything can happen. That being said, the Packers will limp their way into the Super Bowl before being defeated by Lamar Jackson and the juggernaut that is the Baltimore Ravens. In the 2020 NFL Draft, the Packers will turn some heads by drafting a QB. Depending on if Tua declares for the draft, the Packers could see Oregon’s Justin Herbert fall to them. Aaron Rodgers looks like he hates football and its time the Packers start grooming the future. The game against Detroit was the worst Rodgers has ever looked and his body language only amplifies it.
The Panthers will win the Horizon League behind the strong performances of Darius Roy and Te’Jon Lucas. They will play strong in their first game in the big dance but end up getting knocked out. The strong performance will result in Pat Baldwin Jr. committing to play at UWM under his dad, Pat Baldwin Sr. as coach. They are a tight-knit family and Pat Baldwin Jr will put UWM on the map. Read more about him from our interview here.
Overrated football team gets beat in Rose Bowl. Same story as always.
Marquette Golden Eagles Basketball:
With conference play beginning, they will be exposed as one of the weaker teams in the Big East. They lost to a Wisconsin Badger team that is less than stellar this year and a good Maryland team. With Markus Howard returning, the team is too one dimensional and will not succeed going into conference play.
Overall 2020 has a chance to be a very exciting year in Wisconsin sports. There is a legitimate possibility that the Bucks, Brewers, and Packers could all win championships. In addition, having stars in Yelich and Giannis has gotten Milwaukee excited about both the Brewers and Bucks at the same time. Will we see at least one championship in 2020? We will just have to wait and see.
