I have not been a fan of Wisconsin for many years. One big reason is because they have never recruited exciting quarterbacks and choose to run the ball on nearly every play. Now there is Graham Mertz. He was one of the nation’s top QB recruits and decided to head up to Wisconsin. I have been a fan of Mertz for a couple of years now as I included him in my 2019 predictions piece. Wisconsin meanwhile has been sticking with Jack Coan who, while not bad, is the typical average at best QB who will not win the big games against top opponents like Ohio St. A few weeks ago Coan was injured and needed surgery. In comes Mertz for his debut against Illinois on 10/23/2020. Mertz goes 20-21 with 5 TDs in a blowout win over Illinois. While Illinois is not a good team by any means, Mertz looked strong and gave him a lot of confidence. Mertz might finally be the QB Wisconsin fans have waited literally generations to see (I never will count Russell Wilson).
